Joint Press Release
City of Kennett and Kennett Board of Public Works
October 18, 2023
[Kennett, Missouri] In a seven to two vote, the City Council voted to establish a single provider of residential sanitary waste services for the citizens of Kennett. That provider will be the Kennett Board of Public Works. Several ordinances were moved under the responsibility of the Board of Public Works to allow the utility to provide the service.
A notice will be sent to current residential sanitary waste services providers informing them of the intent for the City of Kennett to establish a single provider. This notice requires a two-year waiting period before the city can make the transition. The Kennett Board of Public Works anticipates beginning to provide residential sanitary waste services in November of 2025.
Over the last six months, the Trash Committee and the Kennett Board of Public Works have done extensive research into the cost and operations of sanitary waste services. On September 5, 2023, the Trash Committee made a recommendation to the City Council to approach the Board of Public Works asking them to provide residential sanitary waste services for the City of Kennett. The City Council voted in favor of it, and the Board of Public Works approved the request on October 10, 2023, during their meeting. This research will continue as the Board of Public Works begins to build policies and procedures for the safe and efficient operation of residential sanitary waste services. The Board hopes to hold focus groups with stakeholders and town hall meetings as progress is made during the transition period.
During the two-year transition period, the Board of Public Works will build a transfer station, procure equipment, staff the newly created department, and continue to research the best practices for providing sanitary waste services. The transfer station is expected to be built on property that is already owned by the City of Kennett near the compost facility and wastewater treatment facilities. There are not currently any expected delays in equipment availability.
Current cost estimates for monthly residential sanitary waste services are $16.85, including a receptacle. This estimate is using today’s equipment, fuel, and labor costs. This could fluctuate during the transition period based on price increases. The service charge will automatically be added to your utility bill once the Board of Public Works begins providing the service.
As the process to becoming a city with a single provider of residential sanitary waste services progresses, information will be made available as it develops on the Board of Public Works’ website, www.clgw.net, and social media outlets including Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). |
